From brilliant white beaches and dramatic cliffs to massive rock formations and charming secluded bays, the world is filled with spectacular coastlines. Each destination has its own distinct character, whether it offers peaceful scenery, dramatic landscapes, or unforgettable natural beauty.
From Italy to Australia and from Vietnam to Norway, these remarkable coastal destinations deserve a place on any travel bucket list.
Cinque Terre, Italy
Cinque Terre is a vibrant and scenic stretch of coastline along the Italian Riviera. The area is made up of five small villages dramatically positioned on towering cliffs above the sea.
The villages are connected to one another and can be explored along a hiking route of roughly 18 kilometers. With its colorful houses, steep coastal landscape, and beautiful Mediterranean views, Cinque Terre is one of Italy’s most recognizable seaside destinations. Since 1997, it has been officially recognized as a UNESCO World Heritage Site.
Na Pali Coast, Hawaii
The Na Pali Coast lies along the rugged northwestern side of Kauai in Hawaii. Its untouched scenery is characterized by towering mountain peaks, deep valleys, cascading waterfalls, and clear streams.
One of the best ways to experience this extraordinary coastline is by hiking the Kalalau Trail. The route is regarded as one of the most challenging and dangerous hiking trails in the world, but it offers spectacular opportunities to appreciate the dramatic landscape and enjoy sweeping views of the Pacific coastline.
Cape Town, South Africa
Cape Town is surrounded by one of the world’s most impressive coastal landscapes, where a lively modern city meets the rugged natural scenery of the Western Cape.
The area offers remarkable contrasts, from the soft white sands of Noordhoek to the rocky shores of Boulders Beach, where visitors can encounter penguins near the water. The dramatic presence of Table Mountain and Lion’s Head adds even more character to the spectacular scenery surrounding the city.
Legzira Beach, Morocco
Legzira Beach stretches for approximately eight kilometers between Mirleft and Sidi Ifni along Morocco’s southern Atlantic coastline.
The landscape is rugged, remote, and naturally dramatic, with reddish sandstone cliffs forming a striking contrast against the ocean. The beach was once especially famous for one of its spectacular natural stone arches. Unfortunately, one of the best-known arches collapsed several years ago, changing the appearance of this remarkable coastline.
Halong Bay, Vietnam
Halong Bay is famous for its thousands of limestone islands and dramatic rock formations rising directly from the clear waters of the Gulf of Tonkin.
Hidden among these limestone formations are impressive caves decorated with stalactites and stalagmites. Traditional floating fishing villages can also be found among the islands, adding a distinctive human element to the natural landscape. Because of its exceptional scenery and geological importance, Halong Bay has been included on the UNESCO World Heritage List since 1994.
Great Ocean Road, Australia
The Great Ocean Road follows approximately 243 kilometers of Australia’s southeastern coastline, running between Torquay and Allansford. It is widely regarded as one of the world’s most spectacular coastal road trips.
The road was constructed by Australian soldiers and dedicated to those who died during World War I. It is therefore considered the world’s largest war memorial.
Travelers following the route can discover beautiful beaches, the waterfalls and forests of Great Otway National Park, and the enormous limestone formations of the Twelve Apostles. The combination of ocean scenery and dramatic natural landmarks makes the drive particularly memorable.
Big Sur, California, USA
Big Sur is known for its wild and dramatic coastline along central California. The area features charming small communities, hidden coves, lush canyons, and rugged stretches of Pacific shoreline.
Its remote and unspoiled character has attracted artists for generations. Photographer Edward Weston created some of his best-known images at the rugged landscape of Point Lobos.
Another major landmark worth seeing is Bixby Creek Bridge, which stands dramatically above the coastline and offers impressive views of the surrounding landscape.
South Georgia
South Georgia is an island belonging to the South Georgia and South Sandwich Islands. Its scenery is exceptionally dramatic, with snow-covered mountains, immense glaciers, and beautiful emerald-colored bays.
Apart from a small number of researchers who remain on the island throughout the year, South Georgia has no permanent human population. Instead, the island is dominated by remarkable wildlife.
Visitors can encounter enormous colonies of king penguins, elephant seals, and fur seals, while humpback whales and fin whales can also be found in the surrounding waters.
Antrim Glens and Causeway Coastal Route, Ireland
The Antrim Glens and Causeway Coastal Route encompasses three areas of outstanding natural scenery in Northern Ireland.
The Glens region is characterized by a plateau of dark basalt lava resting on white chalk bedrock. Nearby, the Giant’s Causeway extends toward the Atlantic Ocean and contains thousands of distinctive basalt columns.
Around 40,000 hexagonal columns were created by volcanic activity approximately 60 million years ago, producing one of the most unusual coastlines in the world. The dramatic cliffs of Binevenagh add another spectacular feature to this remarkable coastal route.
Rio de Janeiro, Brazil
Rio de Janeiro brings together some of Brazil’s most recognizable coastal landscapes. The city is surrounded by more than 20 beaches, including the internationally famous Ipanema and Copacabana.
Beyond the beaches, the city’s skyline is dominated by Corcovado Mountain, which rises approximately 710 meters above sea level. At its summit stands the iconic statue of Christ the Redeemer, overlooking Rio and its magnificent coastline.
The combination of mountains, beaches, ocean, and cityscape makes Rio de Janeiro one of the world’s most distinctive coastal destinations.
Lofoten Islands, Norway
The Lofoten Islands form an intricate network of islands and narrow waterways in northern Norway. The region is renowned for its dramatic mountains, sheltered bays, and traditional fishing villages nestled between the sea and steep peaks.
The combination of rugged mountains and peaceful coastal settlements creates an exceptionally picturesque landscape. From autumn through spring, visitors may also have the opportunity to witness the Northern Lights illuminating the skies above the islands.
With its spectacular scenery, remote atmosphere, and distinctive Arctic character, Lofoten is one of Norway’s most memorable coastal destinations.

Sea Surface Topography
Ocean surface topography refers to the height of the ocean surface relative to the geoid, a reference shape of Earth where gravity is considered uniform. Although the sea appears flat when viewed from shore, it is constantly shaped by waves, tides, ocean currents, and atmospheric pressure differences, all of which create subtle variations in sea level across the globe. Studying these variations helps scientists better understand how ocean circulation and current systems function.
