Are you gearing up for your first equestrian adventure? Before you hit the trails, here are five essential tips to help beginner riders appear more confident and expert in the saddle:

1. Equip Yourself Properly

It may seem obvious, but proper attire is crucial for a safe and enjoyable riding experience. A miniskirt or beach sandals won’t cut it! Long pants and appropriate footwear are a must, regardless of whether you’re riding Western or English. Opt for close-toed shoes, ideally low-heeled boots no higher than 1-1.5 inches (2.5-4cm), to ensure your feet don’t slip through the stirrups. Avoid accessories like scarves or purses that could get caught in the equipment, and don’t forget a helmet—safety first!

2. Make a Connection with Your Horse

Remember, your horse is not just a vehicle; it’s a living creature that may feel nervous or apprehensive. Establish a bond from the outset by greeting your horse upon introduction. Extend your arm with the back of your hand for the horse to sniff—this is known as the “horseman’s handshake” and signifies your request for permission to mount.

3. Mount With Assurance

Nerves can transmit to your horse, making it anxious, too. Typically, horses are approached from the left side, and your guide will likely hold your horse’s head for you. If not, don’t hesitate to ask for help. Place your left foot in the stirrup, grip both reins in your left hand, and rise smoothly into the saddle using your right leg. Keep your arms relaxed; they can help maintain balance but should never push down on the horse.

4. Maintain an Upright Posture

Forget the urge to slouch like a speedy jockey from the Kentucky Derby. Horse riding is about relaxation, not racing. To maintain control, sit tall and straight, relax your back, and hold the reins gently. With each foot firmly in the stirrups, ensure that you’re balanced so your horse doesn’t feel overburdened.

5. Use Gentle Reins

Your riding position will dictate how you use the reins. In English riding, you’ll hold a rein in each hand; in Western riding, both reins are typically held in one hand. Keep your arms relaxed—there’s no need to pull hard, as it can injure your horse. Avoid lifting your reins above shoulder height, and maintain right angles at your elbows. To turn left, guide the left rein in a motion akin to opening a door; for right turns, do the same with the right rein. To signal a stop, gently pull back while pressing your heels down.

With these five tips, you’ll not only ride safely but also present yourself as a polished beginner. So, saddle up and enjoy your time in the saddle!

The History and Population Dynamics of the Scarlet Ibis (Eudocimus ruber) in Southern and Southeastern Brazil

The Scarlet Ibis (Eudocimus ruber) is primarily distributed in northern, southeastern, and southern Brazil. While 20th-century records declined sharply in the latter two regions, the population began recovering in the early 1980s. This paper synthesizes the species’ distribution history in southern/southeastern Brazil and identifies key drivers of its apparent disappearance and reappearance: anthropogenic impacts combined with inherent ecological traits.
